"Digo esto para que los jóvenes insistan en lo que no comprenden, que vuelvan sobre lo que no entienden, porque al final los ojos se abrirán ante un mundo maravilloso" ["I say this so that young people insist in what they don't comprehend, so that they go over what they don't understand, for at the end their eyes will be open before a wonderful world." LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE

This is the website of Carlos Mario Mejía Suárez, assistant professor of Spanish at Gustavus Adolphus College.

I have taught for over ten years in different fields of humanities, including literary studies, Spanish language, Latin American literature, Latin American culture, Gender Studies, and theme-based courses such as Representations of the War on Drugs.

My experience teaching started in Colombia, when after completing undergraduate studies in Literary Studies, and an M.A. in Literature, I was in charge of a course about Nineteenth Century Literature: between Latin America and Europe, a course on Literary Theory, Masterworks of World Literature, and Epic poems.

In 2006, I started a PhD in Spanish at the University of Iowa and for five years I taught Spanish language courses at the elementary sequence and courses in Latin American and Spanish culture and literature. After graduating, I took an instructor position in 2012 at South Dakota State University, where I taught Reading and Writing for Communication in Spanish, elementary language courses, and Latin American literature. During my two wonderful years at SDSU I also co-coordinated two study abroad programs in Xela, Guatemala (with a service learning component) and Valencia, Spain. I also obtained a PRAGDA grant to host a Hispanic Film Festival in the spring of 2013.

Since 2013, I have been teaching Spanish courses accross the curriculum in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in Gustavus Adolphus College (elementary sequence, writing courses, culture courses, and literature courses). I have also taught January-term courses on the representations of the war on drugs and on Post-conflict literature and film; a First Term Seminar about Masculinity in the United States and Latin America; and the Literary Experience course for the Three Crowns Curriculum.
